Nato nel 1936, Knud Vad si è formato presso la Reale Accademia di Musica Danese, perfezionandosi con Anton Heller nel ’60 e nel ’64. Nel 1964 viene nominato organista titolare della Chiesa del Monastero di Soro divenendo negli anni a seguire il principale artefice della vita musicale di Soro, creando attività a tutt’oggi note: il Coro Sorano nel ’67, il Festival Internazionale di Musica nel ’70, le “Cantate di Bach nella Chiesa di Soro” nel ’75, l’esecuzione dell’opera integrale per organo di J. S. Bach sul famoso organo Marcussen, iniziativa ripetuta dal ’75 ad intervalli di cinque anni, e coincisa nel 2000 con la registrazione dell’opera stessa. Dal 1978 al 1995 Knud Vad è stato professore d’organo presso la Scuola Superiore di Musica di Lubecca, in Germania. Concertista tra i più attivi in Danimarca, Vad ha effettuato tournee in tutti i paesi europei, nell’ex URSS, negli USA, in Sud America e in Giappone. Ha inoltre inciso un gran numero di LP e di CD per diverse etichette in Francia, Giappone, Russia, Latvia, Polonia e Danimarca. Come direttore, Vad ha rivolto la propria attenzione principalmente verso il Coro Sorano e verso il Festival Internazionale di Musica di Soro, pur avendo diretto in diverse occasioni orchestre danesi, polacche, ceche ed italiane, realizzando incisioni della Grande Messa in do minore e del Requiem di Mozart e del “Cristo sul Monte degli Ulivi” e l’Ouverture II della Leonora di Beethoven. L’importante opera di Knud Vad è stata riconosciuta dalla Municipalità di Soro, che gli ha conferito nel 1992, in primis, il Premio alla Cultura; successivo riconoscimento è stato, nel 1996, il Premio Egholt. E’ interessante sottolineare il contributo dato da Knud Vad alla diffusione in Polonia della musica del compositore danese Carl Nielsen, mediante la direzione della terza e della quinta sinfonia con ouverture; l’anno prossimo effettuerà un tour di tre settimane in cui porterà anche il Concerto per violino e orchestra, ad oggi quasi sconosciuto in Polonia.

Knud Vad was born in 1936 and was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Additional studies with Anton Heiller in 1960 and 1964. In 1964 Knud Vad was appointed organist at Sorø Monastery Church, and in the following years he built up the musical life for which Sorø is so well-known today: Chorus Soranus was founded in 1967, Sorø International Music Festival in 1970, the series "Bach Cantatas in Sorø Church" was commenced in 1975, and finally he started performing all the organ works by Bach at the famous Marcussen - organ in Sorø Church in 1975, and he has repeated this since  then with five-year intervals. In connection with the last performance in 2000 he has just now concluded the recording of all Bach´s organ works at the Sorø organ (the first complete recording with the same organist at the same organ in Denmark). From 1978-1995 Knud Vad was furthermore employed as organ lecturer at the Musikhochschule in Lübeck (Germany)
Knud Vad is one of the Danish organists giving most concerts. He has toured in just about all European countries, including the former Sovjet Union, besides the USA, South America and Japan. He has recorded a great number of LPs and CDs for record companies in France, Japan, the Sovjet Union, Latvia, Poland and Denmark.
As a conductor Knud Vad has primarily concentrated his efforts on Chorus Soranus and Sorø International Music Festival, but he has also on other occasions conducted orchestral concerts in both Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic and Italy. In this connection he has conducted on CDs with: Mozart’s Grosse Messe in c minor and Requiem and Beethoven’s  "Christ on the Mount of Olives" and Leonore Ouverture II.
Knud Vad has several times been honoured for his work. Thus in 1992 he was the first to receive the Cultural Prize of Sorø Municipality, and in 1996 he was awarded the Egholt Prize.
In connection with concert tours in Poland as a symphonic conductor Knud Vad has done a great work to extend the knowledge in Poland of the music by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen, conducting Polish philharmonic orchestras in his 3^rd and 5^th symphonies plus ouvertures, and at a 3 weeks tour next year also his famous Violin Concerto, which is - untill now - almost unknown in Poland.
